A well made G&T is my go-to cocktail. Despite its role in the rise of the British Empire in India, the G&T has stayed a Bombay favorite long after the British were finally driven the hell out. My dear friend Aaran has been making a damn good turmeric G&T for years, and it's always the highlight of dinners at his house. My version is a bit simpler, brighter, more turmeric-forward and highly quarantine friendly.

Ingredients

  • 1 lemon
  • ½ teaspoon Pragati Turmeric
  • ¼ teaspoon freshly grated ginger or ¼ teaspoon Makhir Ginger
  • 2 to 3 shots good gin (I like St. George’s and Stranger & Sons)
  • 6 to 10 ounces of good-quality tonic water
  • Ice

Methods

  1. Zest half the lemon into a cocktail shaker or a mason jar with a lid. Squeeze the lemon, transfer the juice to the cocktail shaker, and add the turmeric, ginger, gin, and a big handful of ice. Seal and and shake vigorously until the outside of the container feels icy, 15 to 30 seconds.
  2. Strain into two glasses filled with ice, and top with your desired amount of tonic water (I like mine quite stiff and spicy, so I use 3 ounces per drink, but if you like a longer drink, add more!).
