Meet the maker

We worked with our friends at East Fork to create the perfect vessel for your chai: a limited-edition East Fork x Diaspora Co. Kulhad in Panna Cotta. In keeping with custom, these handleless cups feature a subtle taper in the form line and widen to a full rim. OG kulhads are an alternative to plastic cups at roadside chai stalls. Our version honors that tradition and celebrates both the legacy and future of chai sipping! East Fork designs, manufactures and sells contemporary ceramic dinnerware made by hand with regional materials and a lot of integrity in Asheville, North Carolina. We’re so excited to partner with a like-minded brand, also committed to growing together, in community.

What makes Diaspora Spice Co.'s Chai Kulhad special?

Our Chai Kulhad is a handcrafted ceramic mug inspired by the traditional cups used to serve chai across South Asia. With the familiar shape of a kulhad chai cup and the durability of ceramic, it's made for everyday use while giving your morning chai or coffee a little extra character.

What drinks can I serve in the Chai Kulhad?

The Chai Kulhad is made for masala chai, herbal tea, coffee, hot chocolate, golden milk, and other warm drinks. Pour in your chai in kulhad or serve your favorite coffee, then enjoy the comfortable shape and durable ceramic construction, whether you're having a quiet cup at home or serving guests.

What is a chai kulhad?

A chai kulhad is a traditional cup used for serving chai across South Asia. Classic kulhads are often made from clay, while a ceramic kulhad offers a similar look and feel with the added durability and reusability that make it well suited to everyday use.

Why is chai served in a kulhad?

Chai in kulhad has long been part of the tea-drinking experience across South Asia. The shape helps retain warmth while offering a comfortable grip, and the traditional kulhad is closely associated with freshly brewed tea served at railway stations and street-side tea stalls. It brings a familiar, nostalgic touch to every cup.

Are ceramic kulhad cups good for everyday use?

Yes. Ceramic kulhad cups are durable, reusable, and well suited to everyday drinking. A ceramic kulhad retains warmth effectively and works beautifully for chai, coffee, herbal teas, and other hot beverages while keeping the classic character of a traditional kulhad.
