Peni Miris is a rare Ceylon cinnamon verum sourced from Sri Lanka. The name literally translates to sweet heat or honey spice in Sinhalese. Delicate and layered in a way that the hard cassia cinnamon sold in most grocery stores isn't, it's gorgeous dusted over morning oats, swirled into apple pie, stirred into masala chai, or added to savory Indian curries for warm, unexpected depth.

There are two types of cinnamon: Sri Lankan cinnamon (Cinnamomum verum) or “true cinnamon”, and Chinese cinnamon (Cinnamomum cassia), its less expensive, one-note cousin. Ours is 100 per cent Sri lankan cinnamon, from the Kandyan Forest Gardens of Sri Lanka–the highest quality of cinnamon in the world.

story_image

Our Peni Miris is a custom blend of Peni, or sweet, honey-tasting cinnamon harvested from younger trees, and Miris, or extra-spicy, cinnamon from the barks of old-growth trees.

story_image

Our cinnamon is sourced from Ekoland, a community initiative that works with farmers and their families to grow food in a way that conserves the biodiverse forests and native flora of Kandy. The result is a highly productive landscape that supports a wealth of wildlife, and very happy cinnamon trees.

story_image

Harvesting cinnamon is a highly skilled task: First the branches of the Cinnamomum verum tree are pruned, then the outer bark is cleaned, and finally, the precious inner bark is peeled by hand, using a small knife and immense skill. The strips of cinnamon bark are then dried, and milled in careful proportion for our signature peni miris flavor profile.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why choose Diaspora Spice Co.'s Peni Miris Cinnamon?

Diaspora Spice Co.'s Peni Miris Cinnamon is single-origin and grown by our farm partner in Sri Lanka, the birthplace of true Ceylon cinnamon. Harvested from the delicate inner bark and carefully dried, it offers bright citrus notes, gentle floral sweetness, and remarkable complexity that shines in both sweet and savory cooking.

How can I use Diaspora Spice Co.'s Peni Miris Cinnamon?

Our Peni Miris Cinnamon adds warm, nuanced flavor to baked goods, oatmeal, coffee, chai, curries, stewed fruit, and spice blends. It's a natural fit for a cinnamon roll recipe or any bake where you want delicate citrusy sweetness rather than a sharp, overpowering spice.

What are the Ceylon cinnamon benefits worth knowing?

Ceylon cinnamon is beloved for its delicate, layered flavor and versatility in the kitchen. Many people also choose it over cassia cinnamon because it naturally contains much lower levels of coumarin, a compound that some research has linked to cinnamon for diabetes discussions, though this isn't a claim we make about our product specifically. Its lighter, more nuanced flavor makes it especially well suited to recipes where the cinnamon should complement, not dominate.

Can I use ground cinnamon in baking?

Absolutely. Ground cinnamon is wonderful in cinnamon rolls, cookies, cakes, muffins, quick breads, and fruit desserts. Its bright, fragrant flavor blends beautifully into batters and doughs without overwhelming the other ingredients.

Is Ceylon cinnamon the same as regular cinnamon?

Not quite. True Ceylon cinnamon and cassia cinnamon come from different tree species and have distinctly different flavor profiles. Ceylon cinnamon is lighter, brighter, and more citrusy, with delicate floral notes, while cassia is typically bolder and more intensely woody. If you're looking for a more nuanced cinnamon that lets the rest of a recipe shine, Ceylon cinnamon is the way to go.

What is the best way to store the spices?

Store them in an airtight container in a dark, dry place. Do not store spices in direct sunlight, as this will shorten their shelf life.

Do you sell wholesale?

We do! You can search for our wholesalers using our store locator here. And if you are a wholesaler and don’t see yourself on the locator, please email wholesale@diasporaco.com and we will add you to this ASAP! Thank you!

When do the spices expire? How long do they last?

Most of the spices are good 2 years from the mill date, which is listed on the harvest label sticker on the jar or bag. That being said, our spices are extremely potent and fresh as we take incredible care to source yearly and aim for quality, so 2 years is our most conservative guideline, compared to most spices in the grocery store which are often 5-10 years old upon purchase.

Are all your spices organic?

Our farm partners have been cultivating spices using practices that go "beyond organic" for well over five years. Although they haven't obtained USDA certification yet, this is primarily because the initial certification can be costly and may lead to cycles of debt. To meet USDA standards, four years of inspections and certificates are required after the first certification. However, we consider this process redundant and unnecessary since we conduct thorough testing on every batch we procure. It's a prerequisite for Diaspora Co. to select farm partners whose soil health and agricultural practices align with our internal standards of growing food regeneratively.
