Yellow Bird Apron

Meet the Yellow Bird Apron, made with our friends at Barefoot, the Sri Lanka-based, artist-led design house known for its handweaving, local craftsmanship, and chemical-free dyes. We fell for one of their textiles, Yellow Bird, worked with them on a pattern we loved, and named the apron after it. Woven from 100% cotton in bright pink, yellow, and orange, it keeps your clothes stain-free on busy kitchen days and brings a pop of color to your cooking. We went through a few rounds of samples to land on an adjustable neck strap and extra-long waist ties, so it fits comfortably across different body types.

Meet the maker
For more than 60 years, Barefoot has been weaving color, craft, and community into everyday life in Sri Lanka. Founded on artist Barbara Sansoni’s belief that work should come to women, not the other way around, Barefoot’s weaving centers give women the flexibility to work where and when it makes sense for their lives. Their focus goes beyond making beautiful textiles: it’s about teaching skills, passing knowledge between generations, and keeping the art of weaving alive. From dyeing and winding the yarn to setting the loom, weaving, cutting, and sewing, the apron passes through many careful hands before it reaches your kitchen. Look closely and you’ll even find the maker’s signature on the finished piece: a little reminder of the person behind something you’ll use every day.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are all your spices organic?

Yes! All our spices are 100% pesticide and chemical free (we lab test every harvest!), and all our partners are regenerative and natural farmers dedicated to taking care of their land and soil, but the organic certs in India are VERY expensive, and a 4 year process. So whilst some of our farm partners are in the process of being certified, many do not feel it is worth the cost, and that given that their product is the highest quality, they shouldn't need to pay a Western certifying body to tell them that!

When do the spices expire? How long do they last?

Most of the spices are good 2 years from the mill date, which is listed on the harvest label sticker on the jar or bag. That being said, our spices are extremely potent and fresh as we take incredible care to source yearly and aim for quality, so 2 years is our most conservative guideline, compared to most spices in the grocery store which are often 5-10 years old upon purchase.

Do you sell wholesale?

We do! You can search for our wholesalers using our store locator here. And if you are a wholesaler and don't see yourself on the locator, please email wholesale@diasporaco.com and we will add you to this ASAP! Thank you!

What is the best way to store the spices?

Store them in an airtight container in a dark, dry place. Do not store spices in direct sunlight, as this will shorten their shelf life.
