Frequently Asked Questions

Are all your spices organic?

Our farm partners have been cultivating spices using practices that go "beyond organic" for well over five years. Although they haven't obtained USDA certification yet, this is primarily because the initial certification can be costly and may lead to cycles of debt. To meet USDA standards, four years of inspections and certificates are required after the first certification. However, we consider this process redundant and unnecessary since we conduct thorough testing on every batch we procure. It's a prerequisite for Diaspora Co. to select farm partners whose soil health and agricultural practices align with our internal standards of growing food regeneratively.

Do you sell wholesale?

We do! You can search for our wholesalers using our store locator here. And if you are a wholesaler and don’t see yourself on the locator, please email wholesale@diasporaco.com and we will add you to this ASAP! Thank you!

When do the spices expire? How long do they last?

Most of the spices are good 2 years from the mill date, which is listed on the harvest label sticker on the jar or bag. That being said, our spices are extremely potent and fresh as we take incredible care to source yearly and aim for quality, so 2 years is our most conservative guideline, compared to most spices in the grocery store which are often 5-10 years old upon purchase.

What is the best way to store the spices?

Store them in an airtight container in a dark, dry place. Do not store spices in direct sunlight, as this will shorten their shelf life.

Can you use chai spices in coffee or baked goods?

Yes, chai spices work beautifully in both. For coffee, stir a pinch of chai spice mix into the grounds before brewing, or whisk ¼ teaspoon into a latte. In baking, it adds warm cardamom and cinnamon notes to banana bread, snickerdoodles, and pumpkin knots. Stick to a spice-only blend for baking, since tea leaves can feel gritty in batters.

What is haldi doodh made of, and when do people drink it?

Haldi doodh is simply warm milk simmered with turmeric, often with black pepper, ginger, or cardamom and a little jaggery or honey. In many South Asian homes, it's a bedtime ritual, especially in winter and during monsoon season. A golden milk spice blend saves you from measuring each spice, so you can whisk about 1 teaspoon into a mug of warm milk and be done.

What makes Diaspora Spice Co.'s Pumpkin Spice different?

It comes down to freshness and sourcing. Our pumpkin spice blend is made with single-origin spices sourced directly from partner farms in South Asia, and every tin carries a harvest date so you know how fresh it is. Those farmers are paid 3 to 5 times the commodity price. Expect a warm, fragrant sweetness that shines in lattes, pumpkin pie, and muffins.

Can you make golden milk with oat milk and serve it iced?

Yes to both. Oat milk makes a creamy base that holds up well over ice, and its mild sweetness balances the earthy turmeric. Whisk about 1 teaspoon of golden milk powder into ¼ cup of warm oat milk until smooth, then add ¾ cup of cold oat milk and pour over ice. Blending it for a few seconds keeps the spices from settling at the bottom.

How long do the Fall Beverage Trio blends stay fresh?

Most blends stay at their best for up to 2 years from the mill date on the harvest label. Store the tins in a dark, dry cupboard, and seal the tea spice mix tightly so the black tea doesn't absorb moisture. That long shelf life also makes our trio a practical gift set for tea lovers, with no rush to finish it before winter ends.
