High on color and flavor, and relatively low on heat, Guntur Sannam comes from the historic chilli-growing region of Guntur, Andhra Pradesh, home to one of the largest chilli markets in the world. It was the first chilli in Diaspora’s spice line-up, and remains an in-house favorite.

Guntur Sannam is grown on the Narne family farm, by brothers Hanumantharao and Satyanarayana Rao, who follow zero-budget natural farming techniques, using only cow dung and urine to fertilize their fields and plants. To ensure adequate cycling of nutrients, the chillies are intercropped with green moong, garlic, ginger, and turmeric.

To avoid chemical contamination from neighboring producers, the brothers use water from the farm pond, and border their fields with tall native trees that protect their crops from pesticide spray. These ameliorative measures create a sanctuary for birds and pollinators, which ensures their yield is high, and their chillies flavorful.

Every January, the chillies begin to ripen, signaling the start of harvest season. Ripening is key to flavor, giving the chilli its vibrant color and fruity, lemony flavor profile. This is why Narne’s chillies are picked only when completely red. They are then dried, de-stemmed, and milled with sesame oil and a touch of salt to retain freshness, and amp up their flavor.

What makes Diaspora Spice Co.'s Guntur Sannam Chilli Powder special?

Diaspora Spice Co.'s Guntur Sannam Chilli Powder is single-origin and grown by brothers Hanumantharao and Satyanarayana Rao on their family farm in Andhra Pradesh. Cold-milled with sesame oil and rock salt, it delivers bright, tomatoey flavor, citrusy complexity, and a balanced, building heat that makes it our go-to everyday ground chilli powder.

What dishes can I make with Diaspora Spice Co.'s Guntur Sannam Chilli Powder?

Our Guntur Sannam Chilli Powder adds balanced heat and bold flavor to curries, dals, stir-fries, marinades, spice rubs, and roasted vegetables. It's just as delicious sprinkled over eggs, stirred into soups, blended into sauces, or used as a chilli powder for tacos, beans, and grilled meats.

How long does chilli powder last?

Properly stored chilli powder keeps its best flavor for about one to two years, though fresher is always better. Store it in an airtight container away from heat, light, and moisture to preserve its vibrant aroma, color, and flavor.

Can Indian chilli powder be used for tacos?

Absolutely. Pure Indian chilli powder brings more nuanced flavor than most pre-made taco seasonings, which often contain spices like cumin, garlic, and oregano. Guntur Sannam adds balanced heat and bright, tomatoey depth to tacos, beans, grilled meats, roasted vegetables, and homemade spice blends.

What is Guntur chilli powder?

Guntur chilli powder is made from chillies grown in the Guntur region of Andhra Pradesh, one of India's most celebrated chilli-growing regions. The Guntur Sannam variety is known for its vibrant color, layered flavor, and medium, building heat, making it one of the most versatile chillies in South Asian cooking.

What is the best way to store the spices?

Store them in an airtight container in a dark, dry place. Do not store spices in direct sunlight, as this will shorten their shelf life.

Do you sell wholesale?

We do! You can search for our wholesalers using our store locator here. And if you are a wholesaler and don’t see yourself on the locator, please email wholesale@diasporaco.com and we will add you to this ASAP! Thank you!

When do the spices expire? How long do they last?

Most of the spices are good 2 years from the mill date, which is listed on the harvest label sticker on the jar or bag. That being said, our spices are extremely potent and fresh as we take incredible care to source yearly and aim for quality, so 2 years is our most conservative guideline, compared to most spices in the grocery store which are often 5-10 years old upon purchase.

Are all your spices organic?

Our farm partners have been cultivating spices using practices that go "beyond organic" for well over five years. Although they haven't obtained USDA certification yet, this is primarily because the initial certification can be costly and may lead to cycles of debt. To meet USDA standards, four years of inspections and certificates are required after the first certification. However, we consider this process redundant and unnecessary since we conduct thorough testing on every batch we procure. It's a prerequisite for Diaspora Co. to select farm partners whose soil health and agricultural practices align with our internal standards of growing food regeneratively.
