Limited Edition Holiday Card by Sameer Kulavoor

$4

Every year, we commission a holiday card from a South Asian artist that we love. This year, it's the one and only Sameer Kulavoor!

All proceeds from the card goes towards our farm healthcare program that makes sure all the laborers on our partner farms have access to healthcare!

Here's his artist statement about the process and context behind the card:

“I recently chanced upon a woman in a patterned saree and woven striped bags at the Lalbaug spice market. The grey monsoon haze made the sari patterns appear just like the triangular heaps of colourful spices and seemed to imitate the geometrical arrangement of spice shelves in all the iconic tiny Lalbaug spice shops. The woman’s posture was so striking, and reminded me of the art deco style carved sculpture of a woman on Mumbai’s iconic New India Assurance Building (designed by Master, Sarhe and Bhuta and sculptor N. G. Pansare) in Fort.

As one walks out of the market, one is surrounded by highrises that have changed the landscape around this bustling market in the last 15 odd years. The fragrance of spices and pickles are quickly replaced by that familiar smell of a grimy humid city, always in motion.”

Sameer Kulavoor (b.1983) is a visual artist living and working in Mumbai, India. His work lies at the intersection of art, graphic design & contemporary illustration and has taken the form of paintings, murals, books, zines, prints and objects. He is interested in why things look the way they do; constantly exploring and understanding the impact that time, culture, politics and socio-economic conditions have on our visible and invisible surroundings. In this age of visual overload, his work involves filtering, dissecting, documenting and defamiliarising commonly seen subjects through the act of drawing, painting and design.
